Amazon PPC Stuck in the Past? How to Modernize Your Strategy for 2024 & Beyond

ep 026 AdLabs

Your Amazon PPC strategy feels like it’s stuck in 2015. You’re still using the same tactics, the same keywords, and the same reports, but your results are declining. It’s frustrating, especially when you see competitors thriving.

The reality is, Amazon PPC has changed dramatically. What worked five years ago simply doesn’t cut it anymore. In this article, we’ll explore the key shifts in the Amazon advertising landscape and give you a roadmap for modernizing your PPC strategy to stay ahead of the curve. Let’s dive in.

The Amazon PPC Landscape: How It’s Evolved

Amazon PPC isn’t the same beast it was back in the day. Here’s what’s changed and why it matters to your business.

From Simple Keywords to Sophisticated Targeting

Back in the early days, it was all about broad match keywords and hoping for the best. Now, Amazon offers a range of targeting options that can dramatically improve your campaign performance.

  • Product Targeting: Target specific ASINs or categories, allowing you to poach traffic from your competitors. This is huge for launching new products or stealing market share.
  • Audience Targeting: Reach shoppers based on demographics, interests, and shopping behaviors. This lets you tailor your message to the right audience and increase conversion rates.
  • Sponsored Display: Retarget shoppers who viewed your product but didn’t purchase. This can be a powerful way to recover lost sales.

Most sellers don’t realize the power of these advanced targeting options. They’re still relying on the same old keyword strategies, which is like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

The Rise of Automation & Machine Learning

Amazon’s advertising platform is becoming increasingly automated. Machine learning algorithms are now used to optimize bids, target shoppers, and even create ad copy.

Here’s what’s happening: Amazon’s algorithm is constantly learning from your campaign data. It’s identifying patterns, predicting performance, and making adjustments on your behalf.

The problem is, many sellers are afraid to embrace automation. They think it will take away their control, but the reality is that automation can free up your time to focus on higher-level strategic decisions.

Data Analysis: From Gut Feeling to Data-Driven Decisions

In the past, PPC was based on gut feeling. You’d launch a campaign, see what happened, and make adjustments based on your intuition.

Now, you have access to a wealth of data that can inform your decisions. You can track everything from impressions to clicks to conversions. Let me break this down:

  • Search Term Reports: Uncover the exact search terms that are driving sales. Negate the ones that aren’t converting and add the ones that are as keywords.
  • Attribution Reports: See which campaigns are contributing to overall sales. This helps you understand the true value of each campaign and allocate your budget accordingly.
  • Brand Analytics: Access valuable insights about your customers’ demographics, purchase behavior, and search patterns.

The key is to use this data to make informed decisions. Don’t just guess what’s working. Use the data to guide your strategy.

How to Modernize Your Amazon PPC Strategy

Ready to bring your PPC strategy into the 21st century? Here’s a step-by-step roadmap.

1. Embrace Advanced Targeting Options

Start experimenting with product targeting, audience targeting, and sponsored display. Don’t be afraid to test different strategies and see what works best for your products.

Here’s an example: One client selling kitchen gadgets saw a 30% increase in sales by targeting competitor ASINs with sponsored product ads.

2. Leverage Automation & Machine Learning

Take advantage of Amazon’s smart bidding algorithms. Start with a conservative approach, such as “dynamic bids – down only,” and gradually increase your reliance on automation as you gain confidence.

Just a superb piece of software. they have thought of everything and it works immediately. thank you, its changed my PPC life.”

3. Become a Data Analyst

Regularly review your search term reports, attribution reports, and brand analytics. Use this data to identify opportunities to improve your campaigns.

Here’s how to fix it: Set aside 30 minutes each week to analyze your data and make adjustments to your campaigns. This simple habit can have a huge impact on your results.

4. Test, Test, Test

Amazon PPC is constantly evolving, so it’s important to test new strategies regularly. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different ad copy, bids, and targeting options.

Here’s why that matters: What works today may not work tomorrow, so it’s important to stay ahead of the curve.

Key Discussion Points from the Episode

Here are some of the most valuable insights Andrew and Stephen shared during the full episode discussion:

Yeah, so the trends that I’m seeing are there’s a couple of things that I’m seeing in general. Some things I’ve always seen and some things which are growing. So the first thing that I’m seeing is that diverse traffic is really, really important.

It used to be you could have a brand on Amazon and live on Amazon and that would be your whole day. You lock into seller central from the beginning to the end of the day. You don’t have to leave seller Central.

You just refresh your orders to see every day you check out your ads, you live in seller central. What’s happening now is number one, there are more places to sell things and you could be losing out on a lot of sales if you don’t have your product in other places to get them purchased. Whether it’s a TikTok shop, whether it’s being on Walmart, whether it’s having your own website.

If you aren’t in those places, you are potentially losing out on a lot of business. And there are more and more situations where for one business or another, those places can be a huge source of revenue overall. Of course, Amazon is still number one.

Overall. Your best bet if you want to grow from zero, is to be on Amazon and to build your business up there. That’s still generally the true thing.

But it’s important to keep your eyes open and to be aware of all the options. So that’s the first part that I see as far as where to sell your products. The second thing that’s important is for your Amazon business to have ads and visibility for your product in more and more places.

Like I said, it used to be that you could live in Amazon between where Amazon would put you and between your Amazon ads. It would be all you needed. More and more off.

Amazon traffic is a huge, huge driver of sales. It can be a huge driver of rank as well. So running Google Ads to your listing pages increases your overall rank.

It increases your relevance. And if you do it right, Amazon will recognize that sometimes your conversion rates might be off because they know that traffic from Google is coming in and that’s less likely to turn into a sale. But they wait against it and they give you boosts to your rank.

Do you think having the, the attribution, using Amazon attribution will help make a change? Like if. Because then Amazon knows that the, exactly where the traffic’s coming from versus oh yeah, I mean you didn’t have that.

So they, if you didn’t have the. Amazon attribution, I mean they see the link, they see the inbound link anyway, no matter what they’re seeing the inbound link. But the, the attribution is giving you more granular data about what happened.

So if somebody just. That doesn’t make a difference on the performance side reporting.
