AI Taking Over Amazon PPC? How to Prepare (and Stay in Control)

Your Amazon PPC campaigns are becoming increasingly complex. You’re hearing buzz about AI taking over, automating everything, and leaving sellers in the dust. Are you worried about being left behind or losing control of your advertising strategy?
This is a common concern among Amazon sellers, especially with the rise of AI-powered tools. But the reality is, AI isn’t going to replace human expertise anytime soon. In this article, we’ll explore the current state of AI in Amazon PPC, what it can and can’t do, and how to prepare your business for the future while staying firmly in the driver’s seat.
What’s Actually Happening with AI and Amazon PPC?
Most sellers think AI is some magic bullet that will solve all their PPC problems. Here’s the thing: AI in Amazon PPC is primarily focused on automation and data analysis. It can help you with tasks like bid adjustments and keyword research, but it can’t replace strategic thinking and human oversight.
Let me break this down. AI algorithms analyze vast amounts of data to identify patterns and trends. This allows them to automate repetitive tasks and make data-driven recommendations. For example, AI can automatically adjust bids based on performance metrics like ACOS and conversion rate. But it can’t understand your overall business goals or make nuanced decisions based on market trends.
The Limitations of AI in Amazon Advertising
The problem is, AI is only as good as the data it’s trained on. If your data is incomplete, inaccurate, or biased, the AI will make flawed recommendations. Here are some limitations to consider:
- Lack of Context: AI doesn’t understand your brand, your target audience, or your competitive landscape.
- Data Dependency: AI relies on historical data, which may not be relevant in a rapidly changing market.
- Inability to Adapt: AI struggles to adapt to unexpected events or shifts in consumer behavior.
- Bias and Errors: AI tools will have bias in their data, and the changes they make may not be the right ones for your product or target customer.
- Lack of Creativity: AI cannot write your product descriptions or create eye-catching images.
Here’s why that matters. Relying solely on AI can lead to missed opportunities, wasted ad spend, and even brand damage.
How to Prepare Your Amazon PPC for the Future (Without Losing Control)
So, how do you navigate the rise of AI in Amazon PPC without losing control of your advertising strategy? Here’s a step-by-step approach:
- Focus on Strategy: Define your overall business goals and develop a PPC strategy that aligns with those goals. What are your ACOS targets? Are you trying to launch new products? Are you focused on ROI? AI tools can help you execute your strategy, but they can’t create it for you.
- Embrace Automation Wisely: Use AI-powered tools to automate repetitive tasks, such as bid adjustments and keyword research. But don’t blindly follow the recommendations. Always review and validate the suggestions based on your own knowledge and experience.
- Invest in Human Expertise: Hire experienced PPC managers who understand the nuances of the Amazon marketplace. These experts can provide strategic guidance, identify emerging trends, and make informed decisions that AI can’t. Many are finding that in-house or agency PPC teams are too expensive and provide lackluster results. Consider AdLabs bid management software for an expert solution that reduces PPC costs.
- Monitor Performance Closely: Track your campaign performance metrics, such as ACOS, conversion rate, and click-through rate. Identify any areas where AI is underperforming and make adjustments as needed. Don’t assume that AI is always right.
- Stay Informed: Keep up with the latest developments in AI and Amazon PPC. Attend industry events, read blogs and articles, and network with other sellers. The more you know, the better equipped you’ll be to make informed decisions about how to use AI in your business.
Let’s look at a real example. One of our clients, a brand selling premium coffee beans, saw their ACOS increase by 15% after implementing an AI-powered bid management tool without proper oversight. After working with AdLabs to refine their strategy and incorporate human expertise, they were able to reduce their ACOS by 10% within 60 days.

Remember, AI is a tool, not a replacement for human intelligence. Use it wisely, and you’ll be well-positioned to thrive in the ever-evolving world of Amazon PPC.
Key Discussion Points from the Episode
Here are some of the most valuable insights Andrew and Stephen shared during the full episode discussion:
Yeah. So, all right, so for the listening audience, we’ll, we’ll read through some of the things that’s, that’s happening here as it’s working on this and presenting its solution. So first it just like is confirming that it appropriately was able to kind of read the file and then it summarizes the steps in its own words.
It says we’re going to filter for the rows where the, where the entity is either keyword or product targeting. Nice. Analyze the performance metrics.
Adjust the bids to target a 30% ACOS. Provide a reasoning for each bid change. So cool.
So it started doing that and it. It ran into a kink. It says it looks like there was an error because of the column max bid is not present in the filtered data set.
Now that’s, this is where you know AI isn’t always right. There is no max bid column. It’s just bid.
And I never said max bid, I only said bid. So somewhere along the way it kind of got confused and they call this, I think hallucinations where basically these AIs can essentially imagine an extra data piece or component. So somewhere along the way maybe it was thinking, I don’t know if Google is, is like a max bid term.
It says max bid in the Amazon ad console at times. I think somewhere along the way like it got confused and started looking for max bid. Didn’t find it.
And then it was like, oh, I see there’s a column titled bid. So it’s, I’ll adjust my analysis to use this column instead of max bid. So at least it was able to troubleshoot itself.
And that’s something I wasn’t able to do a while ago. So that’s much better. Then it says the bid adjustments have been made based on the current ACOs and other performance metrics.
Here are some examples for this targeting entity. With a current beta $0.42 and an ACOS of 24%, the new bid has been increased to $0.46. The reasons that the ACOS is below the 30% target and increasing the bid might capture more sales for another product targeting entity.
The current bid is $0.67 with an ACOS of 32.5% and the new bid has been decreased to $0.60. The reason being that the ACOS is above 30%. It basically just increased things that were low ACOS by 10% and decreased things that were high ACOS by 10%.
What I’m kind of wondering is by what percentage is it?
