Amazon PPC Placement Bidding: How to Calculate Adjustments to Hit Your Target ACOS

ep 014 AdLabs

Your Amazon PPC campaigns aren’t hitting your target ACOS? You’re not alone. Many sellers struggle with placement bidding, leaving money on the table or overspending without seeing results.

Placement bidding lets you fine-tune your bids for different placements on Amazon, like top of search or product pages. But knowing exactly how much to adjust your bids can feel like guesswork.

In this article, we’ll break down the exact formula for calculating placement bid adjustments, so you can hit your ACOS goals consistently.

Understanding Amazon PPC Placements: Top of Search vs. Product Pages

Before we dive into the math, let’s quickly recap the two main placement options in Amazon PPC:

  • Top of Search (First Page): These ads appear at the very top of the search results page. They usually have the highest click-through rate and conversion rate, but also the highest cost per click.
  • Product Pages: These ads appear on product detail pages, often below the main product image or in the “Sponsored products related to this item” carousel. They generally have a lower CPC than top of search.

Why does this matter? Because each placement performs differently, and you need to adjust your bids accordingly to maintain your target ACOS.

The Formula for Calculating Placement Bid Adjustments

Here’s the formula you’ll use to calculate your placement bid adjustments:

Placement Adjustment = (Target ACOS / Current ACOS) – 1

Let me break this down with an example.

Example: Calculating Placement Adjustment for Top of Search

Let’s say your target ACOS is 30%. Currently, your top of search placement has an ACOS of 45%. Here’s how you’d calculate the adjustment:

  1. Divide Target ACOS by Current ACOS: 30% / 45% = 0.67
  2. Subtract 1: 0.67 – 1 = -0.33

This means you should decrease your top of search bid by 33%.

Important: This is a negative adjustment because your current ACOS is higher than your target.

Example: Calculating Placement Adjustment for Product Pages

Now, let’s say your target ACOS is still 30%, but your product page placement has an ACOS of 20%.

  1. Divide Target ACOS by Current ACOS: 30% / 20% = 1.5
  2. Subtract 1: 1.5 – 1 = 0.5

In this case, you should increase your product page bid by 50%.

Important: This is a positive adjustment because your current ACOS is lower than your target.

Step-by-Step: Implementing Placement Bidding Adjustments in Amazon

Now that you know the formula, here’s how to implement it in your Amazon campaigns:

  1. Navigate to your Amazon Ads Campaign Manager.
  2. Select the campaign you want to adjust.
  3. Click on the “Placements” tab. You’ll see data for “Top of Search (First Page)” and “Product Pages.”
  4. Analyze the ACOS for each placement. Look at the last 30-60 days of data for a reliable sample size.
  5. Calculate the adjustment using the formula above. Remember to subtract 1 and express the result as a percentage.
  6. Enter the adjustment in the “Adjust bid” column. Amazon will calculate optimal bid adjustments for you to review and apply based on the percentage you enter.
  7. Monitor your performance. Check your placement ACOS regularly and adjust as needed. The market is always changing!

Common Mistakes to Avoid with Placement Bidding

  • Ignoring Placement Data: Most sellers don’t even look at placement data. They’re missing a huge opportunity to optimize their bids.
  • Using Too Little Data: Don’t make adjustments based on just a few days of data. You need a statistically significant sample size. We recommend at least 30 days, ideally 60.
  • Making Extreme Adjustments: Avoid making huge bid adjustments all at once. Start with smaller adjustments (10-20%) and see how they impact your performance. For example, a 100% increase might seem good on paper, but could lead to overspending and tank your overall ACOS.
  • Forgetting to Monitor: Placement performance can change over time. Keep a close eye on your ACOS and adjust your bids regularly.

Real-World Example: How Placement Bidding Improved ACOS

One of our clients was struggling with a high ACOS of 40% on their broad match keyword campaign. After analyzing their placement data, we discovered that top of search was performing well (25% ACOS), but product pages were a disaster (60% ACOS).

Here’s what we did:

  • Decreased the top of search bid by 10%. We didn’t want to reduce impressions too much on a profitable placement.
  • Decreased the product pages bid by 40%. This significantly reduced our spend on the underperforming placement.

Within 30 days, the overall ACOS for the campaign dropped from 40% to 32%, and sales remained consistent. This simple change saved them over $1,500 in wasted ad spend per month.

Placement bidding is a powerful tool for optimizing your Amazon PPC campaigns. By understanding the formula and implementing it correctly, you can fine-tune your bids and hit your target ACOS more consistently.

Key Discussion Points from the Episode

Here are some of the most valuable insights Andrew and Stephen shared during the full episode discussion:

I want to bet on that. I want to bet on that. But speaking of betting, Andrew, the real question is, when it comes to different campaign placements on Amazon, where are you going to put your money?

Where are you going to make the bet? Are you going to bet more for top of search? That’s a great question, Steven.

That’s a great question. And that is what we’re going to be talking about today. Exactly where to put your bets, which placements perform the best, and how to optimize for the best performance across all your placements.

How to hit those target costs on your top of search product pages, rest of search. We’re going to talk through that today. So buckle up, let’s dive in.

Yes. So a hotly discussed topic, I think fairly misunderstood and fairly underutilized is the ability to control your bidding by placement on Amazon. So in case anyone didn’t know, within any of your Amazon campaigns, if you click into the campaign settings and you look at placements, you’ll see that there are options to increase your bids for placements on top of search or product pages, and then you’ll also see that there are rest of search placements.

So, Andrew, that’s like kind of the default for sponsored products, how those placement adjustments go. There are also some for sponsored brands as well. But for this episode, we’ll probably just focus on sponsored products.

We can always cover more later. Why don’t you kind of walk us through that, Andrew? Those three different placements, the top of search placements, product pages, and rest of search.

That’s quite, that’s a lot of comments. Comments. Our video has, has like four.

Okay, so we just need like, if we get. I like it. We’ll reach it.

If we get. Because if we get 50 comments on this video saying free tool, we will take all of this logic, build a web app, connect it to the API to your own Amazon Ads account so that you can run it and it’ll calculate all of your campaign placements for you and push it, push them out to the API, of course, give you the opportunity to like QA it before it pushes Live. So.

But yeah, because I’ll tell you, that’s been, that’s. I mean, I don’t know how I was able to do it. I don’t know how I did it before.

I do know how I did it before. Before I had this tool that could do it for every individual campaign. I would just get kind of lazy and I would just kind of lump all my campaign placement data together or at least like group them like, all right, maybe I’ll just take all my non brand campaigns or all my brand campaigns and see how the placements are doing cumulatively across those which still got us.

I mean I got us like 80% of the way there, like 80 to 90% of the way there.
